Mayor Announces Launch of NYC's First-Ever Tenant Protection Cabinet

The TPC will work to address housing complaints across the five boroughs.

The city recently launched the Tenant Protection Cabinet (TPC), a city agency dedicated to protecting tenants. It’s a multi-agency collaboration intended to serve renters in New York City by creating pathways to renter-focused programs and services, and to ensure safe and fair housing conditions. Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development and Workforce Maria Torres-Springer and NYC Executive Director of Housing Leila Bozorg will co-chair the cabinet.

The Tenant Protection Cabinet will facilitate better information sharing and coordination among agencies to:

  • Ensure that tenants are connected to the same information and resources regardless of the hotline or agency they contact;
  • Focus attention on underutilized tenant services to match New Yorkers with the supports they need; and
  • Use data strategically to identify and target areas of highest need, and track progress toward better, more stable housing for tenants.

Survey finds housing quality varies by race. The TPC will work to mitigate or address housing complaints across the five boroughs, often made disproportionately by Black and Hispanic tenants. The recent release of the New York City Housing and Vacancy Survey that found a disparity in housing quality by race/ethnicity of heads of household. According to the survey, 23 percent of Black and 20 percent of Hispanic New Yorkers reported three or more problems with their housing, compared to 9 percent by both white and Asian head of households.
