DHCR Postpones Annual Rent Registration Deadline

In an advisory opinion issued on July 30, the DHCR extended the deadline for filing annual rent registrations to Sept. 30, 2020. According to the opinion, the postponement is in response to the governor’s directive to take every effort to keep New Yorkers safe and mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Owners are required to file annual registrations with the Office of Rent Administration. Annual registration information reflects information for April 1 of the registration year and must be submitted through the Owner Rent Regulation Application (ORRA) online system. New York State law requires owners of housing accommodations to file apartment registrations and provide each tenant in occupancy with a copy of the registration as it pertains to the tenant’s unit.

The DHCR says that this is an evolving situation and updates and modifications to Advisory Opinion 2020-5 will be made as needed and posted on its website.
